Beginner's Guide
-
When do I need to buy my uniform? We recommend purchasing your uniform as soon as possible as it can help you settle into class quicker. You can purchase your uniform as soon as you sign up if you wish.
-
I'm not very fit! Is this a problem? Not at all! Participating in martial arts classes will increase your fitness, and the more you train, the fitter you shall become. We are very considerate towards beginners and we encourage you to take classes at your own pace, certainly at the beginning.
-
Do I need to wash my belt?We do not recommend washing your belt, as it can both discolour and misshape them.
-
How long does it take to become a black belt? This varies per class and is entirely dependent on your commitment to classes. In Tae Kwon Do, it takes 3.5 years, provided you train twice a week and pass every grading.
-
What should I do if I have an injury? This depends on the placement and the severity of the injury. If you feel that you can still train, please inform the instructor prior to the class so they can advise you on any exercises to avoid and offer some alternatives.
-
How do I tie my belt?Though there are few different ways to tie your belt, you can see the most common one in the video below.
-
What should I wear and bring to my first class? You should wear loose clothing, sporty if possible, such as a pair of shorts and a synthetic t-shirt. The most important to thing to bring is yourself - and a bottle of water!
-
Do I have to pay for parking? The industrial area we are situated on has a large and completely free car park.
-
When should I arrive? You should aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before class begins. This gives you ample time to settle into the place, say hello to other trainers and immerse yourself in the atmosphere before we start.
-
I'm not coming from home. Can I change there? We have designated male and female changing facilities at the academy, as well as male and female toilets.
-
I'm nervous. Is there any pressure on me?Absolutely not. There is no pressure on you, particularly as a beginner, and our primary aim is to ensure you settle in and enjoy yourself at our Academy. Support will be provided to you throughout your first few sessions in particular, and please don't be afraid to stick your hand up and ask for help in class.
