Jeet Kune Do

Jeet Kune Do is a hybrid martial arts system and life philosophy which was formed by the legendary martial artist Bruce Lee. It is comprised of direct, non-classical and straightforward movements, with a focus on using minimal movement with maximum effect and extreme speed. It was named for the concept of interception, or attacking your opponent while he is about to attack.

The system works using a range of techniques (kicking, punching, trapping and grappling) which are able to flow smoothly together. It is referred to as a "style without style". Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. Lee sadly passed away before he was able to create a formalised guide for his art, and its presentation is often down to interpretation; no two instructors will teach Jeet Kune Do in quite the same way.

Lee himself often referred to it as "the art of expressing the human body". Through his studies, he came to believe that traditional styles had become too rigid, and therefore unrealistic. He believed that combat was spontaneous, and that a martial artist cannot predict it, only react to it. For him, a good martial artist should "be like water", to move fluidly without hesitation.
